Mets' Wright Says He Was Lucky To Learn From Jeter
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Call it a passing of the torch, of sorts.
In 2015, there will only be one captain on the New York baseball scene: Mets third baseman David Wright.
After learning of Derek Jeter's decision to retire after the upcoming season, Wright said in a statement Wednesday that he was "fortunate as a young player in this town" to watch how the Yankees' captain behaved both on and off the field.

"I had the privilege to call Derek a teammate during the World Baseball Classic and got to see firsthand how to lead by example," Wright said. "I've always been a big Derek Jeter fan for what he has done on the baseball field. I became an even bigger fan after getting to know Derek and learning there is more to this game than what goes on between the lines."

Wright and Jeter will have a chance to exchange well-wishes when the Mets take on the Yankees in mid-May, and again if they both make the All-Star Game in Minnesota.
"Excluding the Subway Series, I wish him all the best in his final season," Wright said.
