Mets Fans Ready To Wear Their Pride As NLCS & World Series Gear Goes On Sale

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Mets are headed to the World Series for the first time in 15 years and that means die-hard fans are already hitting the stores where championship gear went on sale early Thursday morning.

World Series fever started at 6 a.m. at the Modell's in Times Square. After Wednesday night's big win against the Chicago Cubs, the store put out National League Champion and World Series shirts, hats, pennants and more.

Some fans showed up early to be the first in line.

"Got this for my son, a Mets shirt and I'm going to try to pick up the same thing for myself, maybe a hoodie," one fan told CBS2's Scott Rapoport.

"One for me, one for my daughter," another fan told WCBS 880's Paul Murnane.

Modell's CEO Mitchell Modell said his stores will sell more than half a million pieces of Mets memorabilia in the next two weeks. Usually around this time, he said he'd sell maybe 100, Rapoport reported.

"It is insane," Modell said.

Mets fans have been celebrating since the Amazins beat the Cubs 8-3 Wednesday night for a playoff sweep.

"I'm excited right now. I'll remember this right now," fan Angel Hernandez said.

"I am dying to see this type of championship in my life. See those Mets make it," fan Albert Bourgon said.

"We're going to the World Series!" said fan Dan Abromowitz. "We're four wins away from the world championship. Let's go Mets. Let's go Mets!"

Meanwhile, the team's hottest-selling jersey belongs to postseason hero Daniel Murphy, Modell said. Earlier this season, his jersey was marked down 50 percent.

It's the Mets first trip back to the October classic since 2000 when they lost to the Yankees in the subway series and in 1986 when they won it all against the Red Sox.

The Mets website got a little ahead of itself earlier Wednesday. Before the game had even started, a glitch showed off the team's championship gear. It included a logo declaring the Mets "National League Champions" and a t-shirt with the phrase "The Pennant Will Rise."

The mistake was corrected, but not before people grabbed some screenshots.

The Mets will face either Kansas City or Toronto when the World Series starts Tuesday.
