Mets Fan Wants Team To Designate Part Of Left Field As 'Kiner's Korner' In Honor Of Late Broadcaster
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - With the Mets season opener on Monday, there's a push for the team to have a permanent tribute to the late longtime announcer Ralph Kiner.
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, generations of Mets fans were brought inside baseball by the Kiner's Korner postgame show.
"He was able to kind of give you a look into the personalities of the sport," Mets fan Ed Solomon told Haskell.
Solomon has launched a Twitter campaign to promote his idea for permanent tribute at Citi Field.
"I'm hoping that the Mets would be willing to rename three sections of the left field seats Kiner's Korner," said Solomon. "He deserves a tribute in perpetuity."
The Mets have said they'll honor Kiner in other ways.
The team will wear a commemorative patch all season and there will be a pregame on-field ceremony ahead of Monday's game against the Washington Nationals.
The ceremony will include a video tribute and the unveiling of the commemorative logo on the left field wall. Kiner's children will take part in the ceremony.
Kiner, who played much of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, will also be honored by the Bucs with a commemorative uniform patch.
The Hall of Famer broadcast Mets games for more than 50 years. He died in February at the age of 91.
