MUST-WATCH: Bartolo Colon Drives In First Run In A Decade
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It wasn't pretty, but man, was it entertaining.
Starting pitcher Bartolo Colon drove in his first run in a decade on Sunday in the Mets' 4-3 victory over the Braves.
With the game tied at two in the top of the fourth inning and Wilmer Flores on third, the 41-year-old dumped a single into right field. With the infield in, the 283-pound veteran threw his bat at a high, outside pitch. His helmet fell off in the process and his bat shattered.
The right-hander was smiling ear to ear as he reached first base, and his teammates couldn't help from cracking up in the dugout.
"When he puts it in play he gets a cheer, so when he gets a hit it's a double cheer," Mets manager Terry Collins said after the victory.
It was his first RBI since June 10, 2005. Coincidentally, that came against the Mets as a member of the Angels.
When asked if he knew how long it had been since his last RBI, Colon joked, "Maybe it was 20 years ago."
The hit ended an 0-for-37 slump for the three-time All-Star. It was the sixth career RBI for Colon, who went just 2-for-62 for the Mets last season.
On the mound -- where he's far more comfortable -- Colon allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter, improving to 2-0.
The Mets will take on the Phillies on Monday in their home opener.
