Connecticut To Roll Out New Metro-North Mobile Ticketing App

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Connecticut Metro-North commuters on the New Haven Line will soon be able to purchase rail tickets with a new smartphone app.

Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy says the new app will also provide riders with information on train times, so passengers can see where their trains are at any moment, WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau reported.

"Now we're entering a whole new phase with apps that will actually allow folks to interface with the actual train their going to get on or thinking about getting on," Malloy said. "I think it's very exciting it modernizes the system."

Rail cars along the line will also be fitted with bike racks in response to customer demand. Around 190 racks have already been installed on New Haven cars.

In New York, MTA has accelerating the rollout of its mobile ticketing app — eTix — at the request of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The free Metropolitan Transportation Authority app allows Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad customers to buy their tickets anytime, anywhere using their mobile devices.

The app is  already available on some LIRR and Metro-North lines, and is expected to be available for customers on all railroad lines before the end of August.
