Metro-North Says Improved Times On Tap For New Haven Line Trains
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Metro-North's new president told New Haven line commuters to expect a smoother morning commute when new train schedules are released next month.
The announcement was made at a public forum Thursday night in Westport.
Metro-North said 83 percent of New Haven trains during morning peak times will run a few minutes faster under the new time-table, WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported.
But Jim Cameron with the Commuter Action Group believes the message is more about reliability than faster trains.
"If you're waiting for a train that's supposed to be there at 7:45, it will be there at 7:45," he said. "And I think that even psychologically, that's going to do a lot to improve commuter's attitudes."
Gov. Dannel Malloy is pushing Metro-North to maintain strong on-time performance goals.
In a letter to Metro-North president Joseph Giulietti, Malloy wrote: "I expect that the new schedule will reflect your commitment to deliver a comprehensive program of safe, reliable and fast service in Connecticut. Indeed, Connecticut will not approve the new schedule without it."

In his letter to Giulietti, Malloy also urged the railroad to embrace half-hourly off-peak service from New Haven.
The governor added safety, reliability and a timely ride are mutually attainable for Metro-North.
