Metro-North Hopes To Ease Overcrowding In 2015
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As the new year approaches, Metro-North riders can look forward to an ease on overcrowded trains.
As WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau reported, as more and more of the Metro-North's M8 cars are rolled into service, commuters will see a decrease in overcrowding.
Metro-North President Joseph Giulietti said right now, the railroad is running almost all 10 car sets in an effort to ease overcrowding.
He said for now, the railroad infrastructure is carrying just about as many weekday trains as it can.
"But we are hitting a capacity limit and I will tell you, I know that some people are frustrated," Giulietti said. "Some of it is justified, some of it is people that don't want to sit in the middle seat, but all in all we are. I'm going to tell you that we're better than we were a year ago."
Train delays are the nemesis of any railroad, but Giulietti said when he came on board a year ago, delays were in the 15- to 20- minute range. Now, if they're late, trains are coming in on average 6 to 10 minutes behind schedule.
