Political Expert: Mayoral Race Buzz Growing For Rep. Hakeem Jeffries
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There is heightened interest in a New York City representative as a potential candidate for the next mayoral race.
As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, Douglas Muzzio labels the Rep. Hakeem Jeffries for mayor buzz as a trial balloon.
Pointing out the election is more than two years away, the Baruch College political scientist sees the fine hand of Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Jeffries boomlet.
"Jeffries has been close to the governor, agreed with the governor on charters versus de Blasio, clearly he is perceived to be a Cuomo guy," said Muzzio.
But democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf sees potholes in the road to City Hall for Jeffries.
"There is a lot of money, you got to put a lot of organization together, and it's not so simple, it's happened three times in the last 40 years or so, so not so simple to do," said Sheinkopf.
So far, Rep. Jeffries has been non-committal about a possible mayoral run.
