Mayor Bill De Blasio To Pre-K Teachers: 'You're Going To Be Historymakers'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio gave a pep talk Tuesday to a thousand teachers preparing to launch his universal prekindergarten program next month.
Speaking at Brooklyn College, de Blasio told teachers that on Sept. 4 they will see the start of some profound changes in the city, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.
"And you are going to be a part of it," the mayor said. "You're going to be historymakers. You're going to be change agents."
De Blasio said the pre-K program will be do a lot of good for children and families.
"We're also going to be sending a message all over this state, all over this nation, that we're serious about education," the mayor said. "We're serious about getting it right for every child, including those who are neediest."
De Blasio's signature campaign pledge last year was to fund universal prekindergarten with a tax hike on the city's wealthy.
When that idea died in Albany, the state government stepped in with $300 million for pre-K.
