Relatives Shocked By Murder-Suicide Involving Family Of 6 In Mastic Beach
MASTIC BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- New details were released late Friday about the Long Island father between an apparent murder-suicide this week.
As CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reported, Wayne Street, 28, allegedly shot and killed his wife, Jenni Lee, 28, in their Mastic Beach home before turning the gun on himself. They were parents to six children.
On Friday, there were hugs outside the home at 203 Woodside Dr. in Mastic Beach where the family of eight lived. Distraught relatives could not find words.
Police on Friday were canvassing neighbors after they found the Streets dead.
Their two youngest children – an infant and 2-year-old – were inside to witness the horror, police said. The other four children were locked out of the house, and summoned help from an adult who discovered the grisly scene.
The family, with children from different relationships, had just moved to the neighborhood a month earlier.
"We never saw any symptoms or signs of tragedy or disaster coming," said Mastic Beach merchant Fred Gaston.
Sources told CBS2 Street was under investigation in a recent Mastic murder. But the children never let on that anything was wrong, according to football coach Bryan Lubitz.
"Marcus (one of the children) has been with me three years now, and he just is a great kid. This couldn't have happened to a better kid, and it's a tragedy. It's just horrible," Lubitz said.
A fundraising site has now been set up for the children, who were being split up in the care of relatives.
Wayne Street was on probation for weapon possession. His attorney said the couple appeared committed to one another, and there was nothing to explain why he would take her life and his own and leave six children behind.
The William Floyd School District said grief counselors will be available to students where the Street children attend.
