Manhattan Street Corner To Be Renamed Stan Brooks Way
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The southeast corner of 10th Avenue and West 43rd Street in Manhattan will soon be known as Stan Brooks Way.
Brooks, the late, legendary 1010 WINS reporter, and his wife, Lynn, lived at Manhattan Plaza at 43rd and 10th after their three sons grew up, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.
New York City Councilman Corey Johnson, D-Manhattan, said it's the neighborhood Brooks loved, and the renaming will honor the gentleman reporter he was.
"He was professional, he was dogged, and he had the respect of both his colleagues in the media and folks in government," Johnson said.
"I've never heard a single person say a bad word about Stan Brooks, and that is a rare thing for someone who had been in journalism for decades," the councilman added.
A longtime City Hall reporter, Brooks worked for nearly five decades at 1010 WINS and covered major stories such as the Attica Prison riot, the civil rights movements and the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.
He died in December at age 86, just a couple of weeks after he stopped working.
"I think everyone here at City Hall has felt the loss since Stan passed last December, and I'm happy that today we're able to honor him," said New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
In December, the radio room at City Hall was also renamed in honor of Brooks.
