Arrest Made After Man Slashed In Face Outside Bronx Deli

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect is in custody after a 38-year-old man was slashed in the face in the Bronx earlier this week.

Duve Williams told CBS2's Ali Bauman that he was smoking a cigarette on Melrose Avenue and East 161st in the Morrisania section of the Bronx at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, when all of a sudden, he felt his face rip open.

"All of a sudden, he [the suspect] ran up and the blood just gushed out," Williams said.

Surveillance video shows the suspect walking away after the attack as if nothing had happened.

Following the attack, Williams ran home to his family -- seeking help from his mother who happens to be a nurse.

"Told my mother, we went to Lincoln hospital, wiped my face off and the blood off," Williams said.

Williams received at least 15 stitches, stretching from his cheek to his ear from the laceration to his face, Bauman reported.

"I don't want no mother to go through that. No one," said Mildred Carroll, Williams' mother. "He had blood all over him. It had gushed all out and his shirt was soaking wet."

Carroll is a nurse, but she told Bauman she was so upset looking at her son's wound, she could barely think straight.

"I didn't know what to do -- you're supposed to hold on for the blood to stop -- I couldn't even do that," Carroll said.

Williams says he has no idea why the man would target him. The suspect didn't say anything to him before taking off, and Williams didn't get a good look at the attacker, because he says he was in shock following the attack.

The NYPD arrested 31-year-old Michael Hall of the Bronx in connection with the slashing.

Authorities say the suspect is a regular at the deli where the attack occurred.

"He don't come too many times, but sometimes I see him," cashier Hugo Silvadri said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, logging on to their website at www.NYPDcrimestoppers.com, or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and entering TIP577. Tips can remain anonymous.
