Man found dead inside compactor chute in Brooklyn

NEW YORK -- A man was found dead early Friday morning inside a compactor chute at a Brooklyn apartment building.

Police said he was discovered shortly after 4 a.m. at the Medgar Evers apartments on Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Investigators are still trying to figure out how he ended up dead after falling into the chute.

CBS2's Elijah Westbrook asked neighbors about what happened.

"That's crazy, like wow, I have no words," said Tony Lewis.

Lewis told Westbrook he heard something a bit startling from police officers.

"I'm hearing somebody just was looking for their keys or something and fell in the incinerator," he said. "That's all I heard, that's all I know for now."

Police said a surveillance camera sitting above the chute shows the very moment the man was looking in the chute and climbed in.

His name has not been released, as the investigation continues.
