Caught on video: Man brutally attacked with brick in Harlem

Search for suspect in Harlem brick attack

NEW YORK -- New video shows a man brutally attacked with a brick in Harlem

The victim is expected to be OK, but the search continues for the suspects.

Police said it started when he accused a woman of stealing packages from his home.

Surveillance video shows the suspect come up from behind and beat the 60-year-old victim with a brick -- so badly, he falls onto the ground. The suspect then continues to punch the victim while he's down.

The woman can be seen yelling at the victim, with a second man as backup.

"Come on. Is that serious? I mean really?" said Harlem resident Carmen Cruz, who couldn't believe her eyes. "Why does everybody have to hurt people? And with a brick? Who does that?"

This all happened around 3 p.m. last Thursday by the corner of West 132nd Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.

Neighbors said the accused woman should have handled it differently, especially if she is innocent.

"Ignore it. 'I didn't do it, prove it.' End of the story," Ward Turco said.

"If you didn't steal the packages, then why you going so hard to try to attack this person?" Anthony Lanier said. "I feel like violence like that is not the answer. Now she is going to be in trouble, facing charges."

NYPD data shows felony assaults are up 7.4% in the area and 19.1% citywide. Many are concerned about the violence.

"The bottom line: The violence has increased, physical violence," one woman said.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or via DM on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.
