Man, 94, Killed After Hitting Car-Carrier Truck In Huntington Station

HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 94-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon when he slammed into a car-carrier truck on Long Island, police said.

Salvatore Tornatore was driving his 2008 Cadillac west on the East Jericho Turnpike, just west of Engelke Avenue in Huntington Station around 2:30 p.m., according to Suffolk County police.

Tornatore's car entered the eastbound lane and struck the car-carrier trailer, police said.

Tornatore, of Huntington Station, was rushed to North Shore-LIJ Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the truck – Michael Nicienski, 45, of Rhode Island – was not injured and remained at the scene, police said.

The Cadillac was impounded for a safety check, and the car-carrier trailer was also examined by the Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Safety System, police said. None of the six cars being transported by the truck appeared to be damaged, police said.

The investigation continued late Thursday.
