Mamaroneck Students To Get Hands-On Learning For NH Primary
MAMARONECK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The presidential spotlight is now shining on New Hampshire and a group of students from New York will head north Saturday to learn about the primary process first hand.
Joe Liberti teaches AP U.S. Government at Mamaroneck High School and he's bringing 115 of his students to New Hampshire to get hands-on experience.
Most of the students will be working for a particular candidate, knocking on doors and trying to get people to vote, Liberti said.
"Now, they're actually doing politics," Liberti told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell. "I think the biggest thing they get out of this is that politics is a participatory thing."
Students who made the trip four years ago called it the most meaningful experience of their high school career, Liberti said.
"You really can't think of a better way to learn about politics than engaging directly in it," said senior Hannah Kahn.
"It's just a very cool experience and a lot of people don't really get to do it," said student William Roberts. "I think this is a great way to test what we've learned in the class, get our hands dirty."
"I'm making a difference, I have a chance to actually influence what's going on," said student Michael Feldman.
The primary is being held next Tuesday.
