Police: Man Stole Mail, Burned Off Names From Checks And Cashed Them

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Monday identified a suspect who they believe stole mail from residents around the city and cashed their money orders.

Gilroy Pacheco, 23, is wanted in connection with 18 thefts that between Jan. 2, 2014 and May 4 of this year, police said.

In each incident, the suspect removed the mail from the victims' mailboxes, used chemicals to remove the payees' name from money orders, and cashed the checks under his own or others' names, police said.

The thefts happened in East Harlem in Manhattan, Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, and several neighborhoods around the Bronx, police said.

Police released two photos of Pacheco from his social media accounts.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
