Ku Klux Klan Fliers Circulate In Lyndhurst, N.J.

LYNDHURST, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Fliers have surfaced in Lyndhurst, New Jersey inviting residents there to join the Ku Klux Klan.

The fliers have a web address and a phone number for a group in Pelham, North Carolina.

Over the weekend, the fliers were placed on doorsteps and driveways in a clear plastic bag weighed down by a rock.

"I thought it was a joke because it was sitting here under the doormat," resident Steve Post told CBS2's Lou Young.

A message on the top the flier reads, "Join the Klan and save our land!"

"It's horrible, in 2015, it's ridiculous to have KKK fliers. Around here? Around this area? That's ridiculous," a resident told WCBS 880's Levon Putney.

"I think it's awful," another resident said.

Lyndhurst officials said residents are best served by ignoring the fliers.

"What annoys me is that that pitiful group has now gotten so much free press and free publicity," said Lyndhurst Police Chief James O'Conner.

"Racism, hatred and bigotry is never something we should tolerate," Mayor Robert Giangeruso said. "We trust this recruitment in Lyndhurst will be unsuccessful and our diversity will continue to be celebrated."

Police said people should treat the posters like any other piece of litter, but considering the ugly sentiments expressed, that's hard for many.

"My children are half-Hispanic," said Sara Salkind.

"I have all different races in my family. I think it's horrible," said Anne Marie Vivenzio.

"That's racist. It shouldn't be here. It shouldn't be happening," said Vinnie Amatucci.

Anthony Cureton, president of the Bergen County NAACP, said he believes the fliers are being distributed by outsiders, not Lyndhurst residents.

CBS2 left a message at the North Carolina phone number listed on the flier, but hasn't received a response.

Similar posters appeared last year in nearby Rutherford, New Jersey, on Long Island in the Hamptons, and the year before that in Milford, Connecticut, Young reported.
