Starters Severino, Nova On Standby In Yankees' Bullpen Should Tanaka Struggle
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Starting pitchers Luis Severino and Ivan Nova are part of an eight-man bullpen on the New York Yankees' roster for their AL wild-card game against Houston.
The rest of the bullpen behind Tuesday night starter Masahiro Tanaka includes Andrew Miller, Dellin Betances, Justin Wilson, Adam Warren, James Pazos and Bryan Michell.
Manager Joe Girardi included three catchers on the 25-man roster: Brian McCann, John Ryan Murphy and Gary Sanchez.
With no worries about having enough pitching for a longer series, the Yankees selected 13 other position players: designated hitter Alex Rodriguez; infielders Greg Bird, Rob Refsnyder, Dustin Ackley, Brendan Ryan, Didi Gregorius and Chase Headley; and outfielders Brett Gardner, Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran, Chris Young, Slade Heathcott and Rico Noel.
Among those who didn't make the roster were infielders Stephen Drew (dizziness) and Jose Pirela; and pitchers Chasen Shreve, Chris Capauano and Michael Pineda.
Left-hander CC Sabathia, who could have been a long reliever for the game, said Monday he was checking into an alcohol rehabilitation center and will miss the postseason.
