Long Island Neighborhood Shocked After Man Shot During Home Invasion
WESTBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The peace and quiet of a Long Island street was shattered by a burglary and attempted murder early Saturday.
No one was home on Sunday at the scene of what was a brutal attack at around 4 a.m. Saturday when two men with handguns broke in through a back door and shot a 33-year-old man, CBS 2's Steve Langford reported.
Police said the man shot inside the home was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Two women were also inside at the time and were not hurt.
"There was just cops every where," said neighbor Stefan Dorso. "Everyone was outside their houses. Everyone was in shock about what happened."
Witnesses described seeing three men pull up in a car down the street wearing black clothing, masks and gloves, Langford reported.
According to police, two suspects fled through a side door after gunfire rang out.
Now, some neighbors are expressing doubts that the attack was a random home invasion, Langford reported.
In the driveway, a safe was smashed open and had apparently been dusted for fingerprints afterward.
Neighbors said police took their time removing considerable material from the home.
"A lot of stuff," said one neighbor. "A lot of boxes, a lot of things."
"They were all here about 8 to 10 hours. They were asking questions over there," said neighbor Bill Veli.
A next door neighbor expressed astonishment that this could happen to the woman he knows across the fence.
"I have a good relationship because all the time I go into my garden and sometimes we talk," said Ion Pasnic.
Now, the whole neighborhood is talking about the armed suspects who are still at large.
