The accident happened just before 4 a.m. Saturday in Smithtown.

Suffolk County police say 54-year-old Thomas Stavola, of Setauket, was driving an Audi northbound when he struck a Mercedes going westbound.

The driver of the Mercedes, 45-year-old Monica Peterman, of Middle Island, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Stavola was treated for minor injuries.

He was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Stavola is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
