Feds Arrest 3 On Long Island After Heroin Seizure
WESTBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Three Long Island residents have been arrested in connection with the seizure of nearly 40 pounds of heroin shipped to a couple's home from Guatemala.
Omar Valera-Martinez, Christian Guzman and Tracy Suarez-Cruz were charged Wednesday with conspiracy to import heroin into the United States, according to Newsday.
Agents with the Department of Homeland Security and the Drug Enforcement Administration tracked the heroin from Guatemala to the home of Suarez-Cruz and Guzman in Westbury, officials said.
The drugs, concealed in 240 plastic bags labeled "coffee," were shipped through a DHL courier facility in Ohio.
Customs officers discovered "an off-white, tannish powdery substance'' in the shipment, which tested positive for heroin.
If convicted, the trio could face up to life in prison.
