Construction Set To Begin On Long Island Expressway Rest Stop
DIX HILLS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The construction of a controversial rest stop is set to begin next week along the Long Island Expressway.
The new welcome center is being built between exits 51 and 52 in Dix Hills.
Residents have opposed the plan for years, saying it would diminish their quality of life. One man, whose property will be right behind the center, said garbage will bring rats to his backyard.
"The concern, the element that it might bring," he told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall. "I'm sure they say, 'Oh we'll keep it trash free, blah, blah, blah.' I don't believe them."
To help ease residents' concerns, the center will not allow trucks or buses. It will include restrooms, a Taste of New York food store and on-site law enforcement.
Construction is set to begin on Monday with the opening scheduled for October.
