Girl, 11, Dies After Being Found Inside Hot Car On Long Island
CORAM, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A family on Long Island was dealing with unimaginable heartbreak Tuesday evening after a little girl was found unresponsive inside a hot car outside a home in Coram, Suffolk County.
Authorities say they responded to a home on Apex Drive, where they discovered the child who was inside an SUV with its windows closed.
"The call was for a young child that was left in a car, her lips were turning blue," Detective Lieutenant Kevin Breyer of the Suffolk County Police Department said. "The call came in from the victim's mother."
Police say the girl's mother pulled her out of the SUV and brought her into their home where she started performing CPR on the child, but it was already too late. By the time EMS got the girl to Stony Brook University Hospital she had already died.
A family friend arrived at the scene after hearing the news and was visibly distraught. Neighbors say they've known the family for more than 20 years and have watched their children grow up.
"Great people, and I don't really know what happened exactly," Peter Parlato said. "The kids are great, just very sad, very sad that this happened."
Police say the mother had returned home with three of her children after running errands. At some point, she realized the 11-year-old was still in the car. It wasn't immediately clear how long the girl was in the car for.
The news was devastating for those who lived nearby.
"I'm teary eyed, it's definitely painful," Parlato said. "I have kids of my own, anything can happen in a split second. I feel bad for the family."
Neighbors confirmed the identity of the little girl, but CBS2 has chosen to withhold her name until it's released by police out of respect for her family.
It wasn't immediately clear if anyone will face criminal charges.
