Long Beach shooting leaves at least 1 hurt after massive crowd gathers at beach. Here's what we know.

At least 1 injured in Long Beach shooting

LONG BEACH, N.Y. -- Police in Long Beach are investigating a shooting near a Long Island Rail Road train station.

At least one person was wounded and treated at a local hospital. Police said he was conscious when he left the scene, but they did not disclose the extent of his injuries.

Police said two people were taken into custody.

Apparent fight at Long Beach boardwalk leads to shooting

The incident started around 6 p.m. Thursday. Nassau County Police said about 2,000 young adults had gathered on the boardwalk.

"It appears to be a social media [event], maybe a Senior Cut Day, and there were multiple schools on the beach, hanging out on the beach, and there were a couple of disputes within that group," Long Beach Acting Police Commissioner Richard DePalma said.

Long Beach Police called county police to request help dispersing the crowd. Police said around 7 p.m., as the group was being dispersed, multiple shots were fired near the LIRR Long Beach station.

"All we see is the cops come, like, really fast down the block. And all you hear is like the first shot -- boom. Then you hear, like, seven more go off. Boom, boom, boom," one witness said.

"There was just a fight. A fight, like usual. And then they started fighting, and then they started shooting. But that's the only thing that I remember. I started running," another witness said.

Long Beach Police are leading the investigation with the assistance of the Nassau County Police and MTA Police.

LIRR service impacted by police investigation

LIRR service was partially suspended between Long Beach and Island Park while police were investigating.

Service was restored late Thursday night.

The latest service updates are available on the MTA's website.
