Inconvenient Summer Draws To A Close On Long Beach Island
LONG BEACH ISLAND, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- It's the final week of what has been an occasionally inconvenient summer for beachgoers on Long Beach Island.
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, a beach replenishment project should be completed by the start of next summer.
From his second-floor oceanfront terrace, Stanley Antonoff has a bird's-eye view of the project. The work has been a little loud and he's losing some of his view, but said he's thrilled.
"It'll hold back the ocean," he said. "It'll prevent it coming and meeting the bay."
Long Beach Township Mayor Joe Mancini said the project will protect residents from a Hurricane Sandy-type storm. Antonoff said the damage from Sandy was devastating.
"We have an additional 10 million cubic yards of sands on our beaches," Mancini said.
The work started in May and should be finished by March.
