Penn Station Experiences Rush Hour Delays On LIRR, NJ TRANSIT Service

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Long Island Rail Road was experiencing delays and cancellations because of reduced access to the East River tunnels.

The railroad said westbound service had been suspended between Jamaica and Penn Station Wednesday evening.

Around 7 p.m, LIRR announced local service had been restored in both directions.

The railroad said it cross-honored LIRR fares on the E Train from the Jamaica, Kew Gardens and Forest Hills stations to Penn Station and on the 7 Train from Woodside to Penn Station.

Commuters experienced some delays and cancellations during the evening rush because the railroad was only using three of the four East River tunnels.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officers have also temporarily restricted access into Penn Station due to heavier than normal crowding.

Meanwhile, NJ TRANSIT was also experiencing some delays due to emergency AMTRAK track repairs in a Hudson River tunnel. Click here to check current conditions.
