LeFrak City Building Residents Say Heat Hasn't Worked Properly In Months
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Some residents of a building in the LeFrak City housing development in Queens said it was almost as cold inside their apartments Wednesday as it was outdoors.
Residents of the Argentina Building in LeFrak City, at 97-05 Horace Harding Expressway in Corona, Queens, said the heat in their building has not been working properly in months.
People on the top floor of the building insist the temperature dips way below the city-mandated 68 degrees during the winter months. Residents bundle up, have put plastic up over the windows, and fill their apartments with space heaters.
They said their complaints have been ignored for months.
"We have to walk around with heaters," one resident said. "If you plug two in, it bursts."
"You can't relax," another said. "It's uncomfortable -- no doubt about that."
Building management said a project to replace the roof for the building has temporarily affected the temperature control, but only on the building's top floor.
"We provided top floor residents with new space heaters this afternoon and hope to complete the replacement of the missing insulation by end of week," a LeFrak City maintenance services representative said in a statement. "We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and are working diligently to complete the necessary work as soon as possible."
