Stephen Colbert Keeps Busy Between 'The Colbert Report' And 'Late Show' Premiere

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- In just five days Stephen Colbert will make his debut as host of "The Late Show."

The comedian hasn't been in front of an audience for months. But, as CBS2's Alice Gainer reported, he has had plenty to do to keep from getting bored.

"When I premiered the colbeard, the Internet burned to the ground," Colbert joked.

He also had breakfast with friends, he had lunch with fans, and he's gotten down to business creating his "Late Show."

Colbert is already lighting up the neighborhood, illuminating his new marquee outside the Ed Sullivan Theater last month.

He told CBS2's Maurice DuBois and Kristine Johnson that the theater itself had a bit of a facelift too.

Colbert said the theater has now been restored to its original 1920s grandeur.

"You really get a sense that -- while we have a late night set, a very intimate set on stage -- for the first time in I don't know, 60 years, it's going to feel like you're in a theater," the comedian said.

The new host has also been spending time getting the word out about his new gig. Six-hundred fans helped him pull off a secret promo shoot last month in Union Square.

"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" premieres next Tuesday, Sept. 8 following CBS2 News at 11.
