Report: Knicks Discuss Trading For Derrick Rose

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Could Derrick Rose soon be a Knick?

The Knicks have had internal discussions about trying to trade for the Chicago Bulls point guard, ESPN reported Friday, citing league sources.

It's not clear if the Bulls would be interested in moving the former MVP or whether the Knicks would have the trade ammo to strike a deal.

New Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek and general manager Steve Mills have said publicly they would like to upgrade at point guard.

Last year's starting point guard, Jose Calderon, will turn 35 in September. He averaged 7.6 points and a career-low 4.1 assists per game last season and struggled defensively.

The team traded for rookie point guard Jerian Grant last season but has shown little faith in him as a starter to this point.

The Knicks also signed Tony Wroten after he was waived by the 76ers last December, but he has yet to play for New York.

Rose, 27, averaged 16.4 points and 4.7 assists per game last season. His career, however, has been beset by injuries. The top overall pick in the 2008 draft, Rose tore the ACL in his left knee in the 2012 playoffs and then missed the entire next season. Then just 10 games into 2013-14, he tore the meniscus in his right knee, ending his season.

Rose is due $21.3 million in the final year on his contract this season. The Knicks could have more than $30 million available under the salary cap if Derrick Williams and Arron Afflalo both opt out of their contracts.
