Gillibrand Bill Would Create New FEMA Oversight
BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Pointing out that thousands of Superstorm Sandy victims are still waiting on assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is proposing new oversight legislation for the agency.
"It's unacceptable that any family who suffered through Superstorm Sandy would then have to suffer through this kind of bureaucratic incompetence, and we should do everything we can to make sure that this does not continue anymore," Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said Monday in Babylon.
Gillibrand's proposal would streamline the insurance review process and improve communication, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.
"FEMA has failed to do its job, failed to prevent fraud and failed to make sure all these families receive the compensation that they need to rebuild," she said.
