Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx gets $200 million for redevelopment
NEW YORK - The Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx, long closed, is about to get a new lease on life.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams announced Tuesday morning that New York state and city are committing $200 million to jumpstart redevelopment of the 100-year-old building, which has sat vacant for nearly 30 years.
"What could we possibly do here? Let's look at the industries in the future - emerging technologies, sustainable manufacturing, urban agriculture, film and TV production. This has so much potential," Hochul said. "We can have vocational training, small business enterprises, arts and cultural events, recreation, health services. There's no limit to what we can do in this magnificent space."
"The community asked for it, and we listened, and now we're delivering," Adams said.
The armory, the largest in the nation, spans 860,000 square feet of available space.
Some estimates say it could take $1 billion to fully restore.
Exact plans haven't been secured yet, but the mayor says it could create more than 1,800 jobs with a $10 billion economic impact.
The space was used temporarily after Hurricane Sandy and during the COVID pandemic as an emergency supply and food distribution center.
