3 Kayakers Rescued After Becoming Stranded On Long Island Sound
FORT SALONGA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Suffolk County rescued three kayakers from the Long Island Sound Tuesday, after they were unable to get back to shore on their own.
Matthew Fisher, 20, his brother Michael Fisher, 16, and Kevin Nobs, 16, all of East Northport, launched their kayaks from Crab Meadow Beach in Fort Salonga around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
The wind picked up while the three were kayaking and carried them into the Long Island Sound – about 1 1/2 miles from shore, police said. At that point, they could no longer paddle back, police said.
Nobs' kayak flipped over, and the elder Fisher brother jumped out of his kayak and tried to swim to shore, police said. The younger Fisher brother called 911, police said.
The kayakers, who were wearing flotation devices, became separated, police said.
Suffolk police Marine Bureau officers Paul Carnival and Keith Walters, who were aboard a patrol boat, rescued all three kayakers, police said.
Police said two lifeguards at Crab Meadow Beach also went out after the kayakers on long boards and aided in the rescue. The two lifeguards were then taken back to the dock.
The kayakers did not require medical attention.
