Joe Namath Apologizes To Geno Smith After Suggesting On Twitter His Knee Injury Wasn't Serious
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Joe Namath on Tuesday apologized to Geno Smith on Twitter after implying the Jets quarterback was soft for not trying to play through what turned out to be a season-ending knee injury.
"If you've got a right knee injury keeping you out of the game why are you standing on the sideline the entire 2nd half?" Broadway Joe tweeted during Sunday's Jets-Ravens game. "How bad can it be?"
A few hours later, that comment elicited a response from Smith.
"Somebody tell Joe that the doctors have the final say on whether you can or cannot get back into the game...... and also that I love him!" Smith tweeted.
The Jets answered Namath's question -- "how bad can it be?" -- on Monday when they announced Smith had suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and would miss the rest of the season.
That clearly left Namath feeling a bit foolish.
"My bad Geno," the outspoken Jets legend then wrote on Twitter. "In the dark ages we players had the say. I hope you heal and play as long as you choose!"
