Police: Man Drags Jersey City Cop With His Vehicle

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was arrested after being accused of dragging a Jersey City police officer with his vehicle.

Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill told CBS2 the incident occurred Saturday around 11:30 p.m. when officers were called to disperse up to two dozen people in the area of the Salem-Lafayette public housing complex on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Union Street.

Morrill said 25-year-old Jeremy Rinnick began yelling and cursing at the cops, and inciting a riot among the crowd.

When Rinnick tried to leave in his vehicle, police tried to stop and arrest him. Morrill told CBS2 Rinnick then punched one of the officers and drove off, dragging the cop with his vehicle.

When Rinnick stopped, the officer freed himself, and along with his partner, arrested him.

Rinnick was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding, resisting arrest, obstruction, and inciting a riot.

The officer was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health where he was treated for minor injuries to his knees and left ankle and was released.

A second person who was in the group was also arrested. Police took 24-year-old Jamachal Torrez into custody for fighting with a police officer. Torrez was charged with obstruction, resisting arrest, and inciting a riot.
