1 man killed, another injured in separate hit-and-runs in Queens

NEW YORK -- One man was killed and another is fighting for his life in the hospital after two separate hit-and-runs in Queens.

Police are searching for both drivers.

CBS2's Ali Bauman spoke to the daughter of the victim who died.

"He's more than I can ever ask for in a father. He's pretty much my rock, and he means the world to me," Anh Tran said.

Tran always dreamed her father would walk her down the aisle. Now she's left to plan a wedding without him.

"He'll be there in spirit, I'm sure, and I know he'll always be here for us," she said.

Seventy-four-year-old Be Tran had just finished up his last DoorDash delivery Sunday evening and was heading home to feed his dog.

Police say around 7:30 p.m., he was walking across Myrtle Avenue by Hancock Street in Ridgewood when the driver of a black BMW struck him and drove off.

"Everything I do is for him. My work ethic, everything. I work so hard to be with him and spend time with him, and it's just not fair someone like this did that to him," Tran said.

She says she wants police to find who did this so that another family doesn't have to know the pain she's feeling.

DoorDash sent CBS2 the following statement:

"This is a heartbreaking tragedy and our thoughts are with his loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. We are reaching out to his loved ones to extend our deepest condolences and offer our support. We are assisting law enforcement with their investigation and hope those responsible for this horrible crime are brought to justice."

Just four miles away, early Tuesday morning, a hit-and-run was caught on camera in Jackson Heights.

As CBS2's Natalie Duddridge reported, surveillance video shows someone in a dark-colored Honda sedan driving eastbound on Roosevelt Avenue near 76th Street when they hit a 45-year-old man trying to cross the street. The car pauses for a few seconds and then drives off, leaving the man lying in the road.

"That's very inhuman," one area resident said.

"First thing's first, gotta make sure he's OK, get him to hospital," another said.

"I would stop, make sure the person is OK, especially if I was at fault. You've got to be responsible," a driver added.

Caught on camera: Man injured in Queens hit-and-run

The incident happened just after 2 a.m. Several bystanders are seen on video running over and trying to help.

First responders said the man suffered severe body trauma and rushed him to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition. We're told the victim is now fighting for his life in the hospital.

People in the area said the strip is very busy at 2 a.m. when people are leaving the bars. They added they often see drivers speed down the stretch of road.

"Sometimes. They're crazy," one said.

"Especially here, very fast," another said.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the dark-colored Honda sedan with front-end damage to call police.

According to police, hit-and-runs are down citywide with 25 in the first half of this year compared to 47 in the same time last year, but the data is little comfort to the families left behind.

"You would never think it would happen to anyone you know, and when it does, it hits you so different," Tran said.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for Be Tran's funeral. To donate, visit gofundme.com/f/help-raise-money-for-be-trans-funeral.

Anyone with any information in either incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or via DM on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.
