Former 'Colbert Report' Intern Making Network Debut On 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A local comedian will take the stage Friday night, on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

When he showed up for his performance, he met a familiar face from his humble beginnings.

As CBS2's Scott Rapoport reported, Sam Morril spent countless hours getting coffee, sandwiches, making copies, and doing "other intern stuff that no one wants to do."

Morril dreamed about one day coming back to the boss' show and performing before a huge national audience.

On Friday, the 29-year-old professional comic will make his network debut on the famed stage in the Ed Sullivan theater.

"It's a pretty cool mark in my career," he said.

Morril interned for Colbert 9 years ago at The Colbert Report on Comedy Central.

"He was awesome. He would do pranks throughout the office. I remember one time he got on the intercom and he just yelled 'everyone is fired," Morril recalled.

For the last 11 years Morril has been honing his comedic chops at various comedy clubs around the city and around the country, doing killer standup.

Much of it has taken place at the Comedy Cellar in Greenwich Village, where booker and manager Estee Adoram has watched him go from newbie to headliner.

"His approach is edgy, brave, in your face type of thing," she said, "He's very good."

It's all heady stuff for Morril who's done his share of nationally televised gigs, but this one is different.

"This is a special one. It's on CBS. It's on the Colbert stage," he said.

The former intern has come a long way from getting coffee and making copies.

You can watch The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on CBS2 every weeknight right after the CBS2 news at 11.
