Inmate pulled from the water off Rikers Island

Bronx jail inmate hospitalized after jumping into East River

NEW YORK -- The NYPD responded to a near-drowning Tuesday afternoon in the waters between Rikers Island and the Bronx. 

It happened around 11:44 a.m., according to the Department of Correction. 

Correction officials say the the inmate climbed a fence in the recreation yard at the Vernon C. Bain barge jail center and jumped into the river. 

The inmate was pulled from the water and rushed to the hospital. There was no immediate word on their condition. 

An investigation is ongoing.
