Indian Christian Congregation Finds Permanent Home In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A former Roman Catholic church in Yonkers will now be home to an eastern congregation.

As WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported, the Indian parish is holding its first services on Saturday afternoon.
What was once Most Holy Trinity Church is now St. Mary's Malankara Catholic Church. The Indian congregation formed in 1984 in New York City.

The Rev. Sunny Mathew said the church has spent the past 17 years worshiping in the chapel at Salesian High School in New Rochelle.

"Until now, we've been worshipping in the worship places of others," Mathew said. "Now, it becomes a place of our own."

Mathew said the new space will allow the parish to hold daily celebrations of mass and create youth groups and religious education programs. That had been a challenge at Salesian, as they could not use the building on school days.

St. Mary's is the first Malankara Catholic church in Westchester County.
