In Case You Haven't Noticed, Knicks Are 1 1/2 Games Out Of Playoff Spot

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Knicks will have a losing season in 2013-2014. They are 30-42, are 10 1/2 games out of first place in the Atlantic Division and lost to the lowly Cavaliers and Lakers this week.

More accurately, they got destroyed by the Lakers, allowing a ridiculous 51 third-quarter points and falling by 31.

But ... um ... in case you haven't noticed, the 'Bockers are just 1 1/2 games behind the Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

For real.

The Knicks have gained plenty of ground in March, a month in which they won eight games in a row before collapsing against Cleveland. After dropping two in a row, New York got back on track on Wednesday with a victory over the Kings in Sacramento.

New York has consistently played some of the worst teams in the NBA over this recent stretch, but the remaining schedule gets much tougher from here on out. The Knicks will take on the Suns on Friday night, and then will have nine games remaining on their schedule.

The final regular-season opponents include the Warriors, the Jazz, the Nets (twice), the Wizards, the Heat, the Raptors (twice) and the Bulls.

"This year has been a very challenging year mentally, emotionally for me," Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony said. "But I still find ways to just remain positive throughout this situation and try to win basketball games. Throughout all of this, we still have a chance to get in the postseason. That's most important."

The Hawks, 31-40, have lost five straight. Their remaining schedule is easier than the Knicks', but many challenges still lie ahead. Their final 11 games are against the Wizards, the 76ers, the Bulls, the Cavaliers, the Pacers, the Pistons, the Celtics, the Nets, the Heat, the Bobcats and the Bucks.
