Icy Walkway Proving Dangerous For Residents In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An icy walkway near a busy Bronx subway station has become a dangerous hazard to pedestrians and straphangers.
As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported Wednesday, residents and subway riders are having quite a tough time trying to traverse a walkway along the Grand Concourse at 175th Street in Tremont.
The 100-foot stretch of sidewalk that leads to the B and D trains is covered with about 3 inches of ice, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.
"It looks like an ice rink. But just very dirty and clumpy," one Bronx resident told Diamond.
Marina Collado said it's more than just dirty, it's also dangerous. "Well it's actually very tough. My mom fell and broke her leg."
Early Wednesday morning, a woman fell and had to be taken to the hospital, Schuck reported.
Residents say many people have fallen on the icy path over the last several days.
"It was a lot since this morning. A lot of people, about 10 or 15 fell already," Cambell told Schuck.
A man who appeared to be a city Department of Transportation inspector was seen at the site briefly, Diamond reported.
A spokesman for the department said crews will address the location at a priority level by Thursday morning.
Raymond Jerzik, who gets around with a cane, said he hoped it would be taken care of before the storm on Thursday.
"When it gets snow on top of it and then if there's rain -- cause they're talking rain too -- it will be like a hockey rink," Jerzik said.
