2 Men Found Dead After Fire At Abandoned Building In Hunts Point

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A fire in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx has claimed two lives.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at an abandoned building on Faile Street around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

After the fire was extinguished, two men in their 30s, believed to squatters, were found inside.

The men were taken to Lincoln Hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.

The home had been boarded up with heavy plywood, bolts and concrete since another blaze on March 30, limiting the ways out of the house, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

It is believed the men, who died of smoke inhalation, got into the building through the basement, Schuck reported.

"It's been boarded up pretty well and I haven't really seen nobody going in and out of there, I don't really know what they were doing, how it happened," one neighbor said.

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the buildings department insist they have been closely monitoring the home, Schuck reported.

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are working with NYPD to determine the cause of the fire.
