Woman Arrested After Hot Pink Bank Hold-Up In Brentwood

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was arrested and charged late Thursday with holding up a Brentwood, Long Island bank while wearing a hot pink scarf.

Annette Vogelfang, 51, of Brentwood, was charged with third-degree robbery, Suffolk County police said.

Customers shook their heads Thursday, when they saw a picture of the woman who held up the Citibank on Suffolk Avenue in Brentwood.

Margarita Santiago told CBS2's Sonia Rincon it's hard to believe someone held up the bank looking like that and got away.

"Well, I'm a little scared because it might be somebody I know from banking there all the time, and I would have second thoughts because it's broad daylight when this happened," she said.

Bank officials told CBS2 the suspect handed the teller a note demanding cash. Despite her unusual appearance police say the robbery was no joke.

"The note said that if the bank teller did not comply with her demands she would resort to violence," Sgt. James Madden said.

Detectives said the lady in pink did not show a weapon and no one was hurt. They said the bank was packed with customers who never noticed a thing.

Customer Douglass Valentine said he's surprised her disguise didn't raise a red flag, or in this case a hot pink one.

"That's like a typical sign. They should have realized it, that something was up," he said.

A worker at a business nearby said he saw the woman stroll casually out of the bank and then suddenly race through the back of the parking lot behind a fast food restaurant.

Vogelfang was to be held overnight at the Suffolk County police Fourth Precinct and arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
