Police ID Body Pulled From Hudson River As Suspect In Fatal East Harlem Homeless Shelter Stabbing

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A body pulled from the Hudson River this week has been identified as the man who was wanted for killing a former teacher in an East Harlem homeless shelter.

Police identified the body as 21-year-old Anthony White on Saturday. His body was found floating in the river around 11 a.m. Wednesday in the area 145th Street, police said. The medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities have been looking for White since Jan. 27. Police said he stabbed to death and nearly decapitated his roommate, 62-year-old Deven Black, at the Boulevard Homeless Shelter on Lexington Avenue in East Harlem.

The NYPD said White killed the victim after threatening for days to kill someone over his stolen cellphone. He fled after the stabbing.

In the wake of this and other high-profile incidents at homeless shelters, the city announced earlier this week that it is dedicating more money, resources and manpower to combat the issue of violence in the shelter system.
