Homeland Security Dedicating $181 Million To New York City
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City will receive $181 million from the Department of Homeland Security's $1.6 billion budget.
Speaking Thursday at NYPD headquarters, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said that homeland security is becoming a matter of hometown security.
"The terrorist threat is more decentralized, more diffused, more complicated," he told reporters, including WCBS 880's Marla Diamond. "It involves the potential lone-wolf actor."
The funds were held up in Congress as Republicans unsuccessfully fought to overturn President Barack Obama's executive actions on immigration by linking them to funding for Homeland Security.
"It is my hope that going forward dangerous partisan games never again jeopardize resources," Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., said at Thursday's news conference.
New York City has steadily seen its share increase as Homeland Security has cut the number of areas receiving security dollars.
In addition to the money going to the city, New York state is receiving $76 million. Newark was awarded $20 million, and the state of New Jersey is getting $8 million.
