Historic Garden City Hotel Celebrates 140th Anniversary
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- It's a big week for Long Island's most famous hotel as it celebrates its 140th anniversary, WCBS 880's Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.
Many famous people have stayed at the historic Garden City Hotel, according to General Manager Grady Colin, including one he is only now talking about.
"I guess I can talk about it now. Michael Jackson, when he needed to get away from the media, he came here and stayed for a month. [He] rented the entire penthouse floor for himself and his entourage and kind of just relaxed and hit out for a while," Colin said.
As Xirinachs reported, other celebrity guests include the Kenedys, the Astors and the Vanderbilts. Soap opera star Susan Lucci met her husband at the hotel when she worked as a waitress and hostess back in the 1960s, WCBS 880 reported.
The Garden City Hotel has also played host to a number of racing heroes during the Belmont Stakes.
