New Jersey Police Chase Ends In Deadly Crash, Arrest
HILLSIDE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A police pursuit of a stolen vehicle ended in a deadly crash in New Jersey, according to authorities.
It all started at 12:35 a.m. Thursday on Route 22 West when police spotted a blue 2009 GMC Sierra pickup truck speeding, Hillside Police said.
Officers stopped the car and it appeared the driver was complying when they asked him to pull into a nearby parking lot, but as the officers returned to their car the pickup sped off, 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet reported.
A police chase began and the officers then learned the car was stolen out of Hazlet, police said.
The chase ended when the speeding pickup failed to negotiate a turn and crashed into an embankment off exit 54 on Route 78, police said.
The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown out of the vehicle and was later pronounced dead at University Hospital, police said.
A passenger in the vehicle, identified as 26-year-old Tiereka Barr, was not injured. He was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property.
