Minivan Hits 3 Men Changing Tire In The Bronx, 1 Killed

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One man is dead and two others are seriously injured after being struck by a minivan while they were trying to change a tire on the New England Thruway in the Bronx, police said.

It happened around 2 a.m. Thursday between exits 10 and 11, near Bartow Avenue in Baychester.

The men were standing on the left shoulder of the narrow roadway trying to change a flat tire when police said a 52-year-old man driving a minivan struck all three.

One of the men, identified by police as 29-year-old Artimis Jones, was killed from the impact of the crash. The two others were taken to Jacobi Medical Center in stable condition.

The driver of the minivan remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported. Police do not expect to charge the driver.

It took crews about three hours to clear the scene and reopen all lanes of traffic.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The crash serves as a reminder to driver to be especially cautious if experiencing car trouble on a highway.

Experts said the best advice is to try and drive to the next exit to a safe area away from traffic. If you cant call the authorities and wait for help.
