Crews Inspect Wall Along Henry Hudson Parkway Amid Stability Concerns
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two lanes on the northbound Henry Hudson Parkway were blocked Tuesday night, as crews inspected a bulging wall for stability.
The lanes were shut down around 4 p.m. Traffic moved at a glacial pace from the late afternoon through the night along the Henry Hudson Parkway and the West Side Highway, as crews inspected the bulging retaining wall at 123rd Street, CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported.
CHECK: Traffic
There were concerns about issues of stability. Video from the scene showed a slight crack in the wall.
"I've noticed that it's about to fall down. It's a little loose there. The dirt is like, every time it gets more and more rainy, it seems like it's pushing up farther towards the street," Brian Rexhepi said as he prepared to get on the expressway.
Rexhepi was stuck going into the heavy traffic.
"After 12 hours a day, I'm a little tired, but I got to do what I got to do," he said.
Many were frustrated by the traffic.
"Trying to get home after a long day, just going to take an alternative route," one woman said.
"There was a warning downtown because I was coming up from 14th Street from school -- there was a warning that said 'right lanes closed,'" another woman said.
In 2005, a major portion of a retaining wall collapsed onto the Henry Hudson Parkway on 183rd Street because of heavy rain. The collapse caused major detours for several months.
Crews were to continue their inspection of the wall at 123rd Street, and it was not known how long the lanes would be closed. Motorists were advised to find an alternate route.
