Hempstead Parents Call For Surrounding School Districts To Help Alleviate Overcrowding
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Hempstead public school officials are scrambling to deal with classroom overcrowding after about 1,200 new students enrolled this year.
As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, some classes have as many as 50 students in them. Many of the new students are immigrants.
Some parents at a school board meeting Wednesday night called on surrounding districts to help absorb the overflow of students.
Glenn Clark, the father of a student, said he believes every child has a constitutional right to be educated.
"Give everybody -- no matter what your creed, race or anything -- the right to go to schools," he said.
Clark said he agreed that surrounding districts should step up to help.
"It would be the best thing for all of us to be able to come together and help these common issues get solved," Clark said.
Hempstead officials said they have a plan for dealing with the overcrowding, which they will unveil at a meeting Friday.
